Non Consumer Girl Goes to Her First Clothing Swap Party!

Recently, I went with a girlfriend to a Clothing Swap Party, called Frock Swap.

The basic principle of a clothing swap party is that women bring unwanted items of women’s clothing or accessories that were either new or near new to swap for something that they did want. No money changes hands.

A couple of days prior, my girlfriend and I had gone through our “archived” clothing, being purchases that we had made and when we had gotten home, decided that the colour or cut or design didn’t suit, or that we had grown out of prior to being ablge to wear it! Or that what had seemed like a bargain at the time, really wasn’t because it really wasn’t our style. I had seven items, my girlfriend had five.

We turned up at about 6pm, it was raining, so we made a dash for the party clutching our roped bags of our unwanted clothing.

We could bring up to 6 items in to receive 6 tokens. When we arrived at the Party, we found that we were among the first. We gave up our clothing mistakes, they were scrutinised by the party organisers, and then we were given our tokens.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that there were refreshements of the sparkling kind to get us in the mood! There were also an assortment of quality cheeses, grapes, sliced fresh summer fruits and crackers. So we relaxed in the courtyard while the partygoers arrived.

For about 45 mins, women arrived in their packs, er i mean groups, chatting giggling and there was an expecant buzz in the air.

The rules were that the swap didn’t start until all clothing had arrived. The clothing was arranged on hanging racks according to type: pants on section, dresses on another, tops on another, skirts on another. There were also some tables, with near new shoes, boots, handbags, necklaces and bangles.

About 10 mins before the swap started, we were told that we were now allowed into the clothing area, and we could browse the racks. But we couldn’t try anything on until the swap started.

Unfortunately, there were about 4 or 5 women who just grabbed an armful of clothing and held onto it ( can you believe!) One of the party organisers saw a couple of the women, and insisted that they hang the clothes back on the rack to be fair to everyone. However, there were a few women standing near me who were holding armfuls of clothing prior to the swap starting.

Go! The swap started, and it was quite fun browsing through the eclectic assortment of colours, fabrics and styles.

I found a lovely dress. It fits perfectly, and is finished with a satin sash. I will get a lot of wear out of it.

My girlfriend found a lovely silk wraparound skirt. She is very tall and lean, and it looks just perfect on her and are in her colours. She also found a lovely summer woven multicoloured handbag. I had admired it in the browsing time too, but had forgotten about it when I found the dress.

I was very satisfied, as I thought if I came home with 1 item that I really liked after bringing 7 unwanted items that I would never wear, then it was a success!

Before the swap ended, I did a quick visual sweep of the clothing racks, to see whether my unwanted items had found a good home. I was happy and just a little bit relieved! that what were my mistakes had been a “find” for someone else.

We found a coffee shop afterwards and have a lovely chat and catch up to finish off our fun evening!

Its Hot Hot Hot

It is 41 degrees in Sydney today.

That is 105.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

We’ve already been for a swim in the pool this morning, until the sun became too hot.

My family and I are staying inside using things I already have like books, games, sewing things and keeping cool.

I’m making the most of the weather and doing lots of laundry and line drying it. The clothes are getting dry in just under an hour.

We will go for another swim in the pool with some friends, after 3pm today when the sun isn’t so strong.

I’m going to make dinner of Thai style steamed fish with ginger and lime and chilli on bok choy.

A Compact-y, Non-Consumer kind of day.

A non-consumer dilemma….

My ten year old niece ( with whom I have a very positive, close relationship with and Barbie Girl does too!) has just announced to the family that she doesn’t want any gifts for Christmas.

She wants Money.

And for a very specific reason.

She wants to purchase a $700 i phone.

OMG !

What on earth can a 10 year old girl want with a $700 i phone??

My mum ( her grandmother) is very upset as she announced this at a family dinner. Mum always takes the time to look for gifts for the children that are things that they like, such as art and craft supplies, tickets to the children’s theatre, clothes that they like etc. For Mum, who has lots of time on her hands, looking for the perfect gift is part of the joy of giving.

She also quills and handmakes cards for all of the family. She handwrites poems, tailored to each member of the family which highlight their personalities and idiosyncrasies, which we adore.

My mum is getting pressure from my niece’s Mum and partner to ” oblige” with the cash. Her view is that her daughter can’t earn enough money from doing odd jobs and her pocket money to purchase the phone.

My point is that then “SO SHE CAN”T AFFORD TO HAVE AN IPHONE!”

No way Non Consumer Girl is getting manipulated for a gift I don’t agree with in principle.

Clutter Clearing Monday 16th November 2009

I’m on a clutter clearing roll, baby!
CB040815

Today I am putting up for sale a baby cot. This was a bit of a sentimental one for me. It was a very good quality cot, with high safety standard and very solid. It was really a lovely piece of furniture, and we paid almost $1000 for it almost 7 years ago.

I had been holding on Just in Case we were able to have another baby.

But, after 6 years of trying, looks like we need to accept (amongst other things!) that it is time to sell the cot.

I also have the matching baby change table.

I should be able to sell it easily and at least get a few hundred dollars for it to go towards my $5000 clutter challenge.

Decluttering today Saturday 14th Nov

I’ve started back on my declutter challenge in the past week.

Here is todays achievement:

1. 4 boxes of CD and DVD empty cases (Mr Techno has an alternative more space efficient storage system for our music and our movies) (give away)

2. large cream coloured woollen floor rug, no longer needed in our smaller home. This had been rolled up against a wall, awaiting a decision! Decision has now been made, out it goes to a new home ( give away)

3. shopping bag full of freshly laundered small soft toys, mainly from McDonalds, no longer played with

All of these items we have now given away free, via Freecycle.

So no $$ to add to my kitty of cash for my decluttering challenge from this decluttering exercise today.

However, I have freed up some space in our home, which is priceless!

Take a look at the clutter I removed from my house today!

I removed 3 full shopping bags of clothing (11 items) and a bag of books ( about 7 books) and 1 DVD.

These items are all to be “recycled”.

7 items went with me to the “Frock Swap”, and the rest of the clothing and the books and DVD I took to Goodwill this morning.

Here are the things that went to the “Frock Swap” with me last night.

Clearing Clutter …Tuesday 9 Nov 09

Earlier this year I started my clutter challenge to see if I could clear the clutter from my house, and in the process try to raise $5000.

Other things took over for a while, and I had to put the challenge to the side for a while.

Now it is November, and I have the time and space to be able to take up my challenge again. I am going to clear the clutter from my house ( and garage!) and I will endeavour to raise $5000 in the process. The only change I need to make is the timeline, as this will take a bit longer than the 2 months I have left.

I had already raised $1500, so I have $3500 left to go.

Today I listed some furniture and toys on ebay today, and I listed some children’s CDS and DVDs on ebay last week. These total about $400 if they all sell, less 10% cost of selling , so about $360 if they all sell.

I will update my total and what I have cleared from my house as I go….

More Christmas Gift Ideas…

One of my passions is food.

I am excited about the wonderful gourmet foods we have here in Australia.

I have been researching online local products such as wine, ( praise Hunter Valley, Barossa Valley and Margaret River wines!) marinated fetta cheeses, olives, olive tapenade, chilli dips, mustard, tomato rellish, antipasto, hand made chocolates, macadamias, chocolate covered coffee beans, dried fruit, quince paste, dips, camembert and brie cheese, pear paste and gourmet crackers.

I am so excited!

I am going to prepare some gift baskets and gourmet gift hampers for Christmas gifts this year featuring our great local produce.

This will support local boutique businesses.

Wedding Dress

No, I’m not getting married again.

CB059179

If I did, it would be to Mr Techno again ( Hi Hon!)

On breakfast TV the other morning, there was a young woman who was talking about her “budget” wedding.

I cringe when I hear the words “frugal” and “budget”, its just me and how I’m wired, but it conjures up inferior or cheap quality.

I seek quality over quantity anyday.

But back to the story.

She was saying that she saw her “dream dress” in a shop and tried it on. It cost $2500.

She then went hunting on ebay, and bought the same ( or if not, very similar) dress for $8.60. It was in immaculate once worn condition.

Just think how many hours of after tax income she would have had to earn to purchase the dress in the shop!

She looked stunning in her wedding photos.

I think she should relist the dress on ebay and share the love!
